Tulane Legal Assistance Program

TULAP is a legal services program funded by the Tulane University Associated Student Body. We provide free legal information and low-cost representation to current Tulane University students, staff, and faculty. TULAP also provides free notarial services to eligible persons. Because we are funded by the University, we may only provide services to current students, staff, and faculty, and cannot represent one member of the Tulane community against another, as that would present a conflict of interest.

Please note that TULAP's services are available ONLY to current Tulane students, faculty, and staff. You MUST provide a Tulane email address to make an appointment.

COVID-19 Update:

Under the directive of Tulane University, TULAP is taking steps to ensure safety in response to the COVID-19 virus. TULAP has returned to in-person appointments at our office at 200 Broadway Street, Suite 212 New Orleans, Louisiana 70118. If your circumstances necessitate a virtual appointment, please contact us with your request. For further questions, please contact us via email at tulap@tulane.edu. If you call, you must leave a voicemail. We will monitor the voicemails remotely.

For bailouts and lockups, contact Carolyn Cooper on her cell phone at (504) 534-5406. If you have an urgent civil matter and the office is closed, you may contact our retained counsel, Gregory Nichols, at (504) 354-0444.

What to Expect

Appointments in the Criminal and Civil Program will take place in person at our 200 Broadway St. office unless your circumstances necessitate a virtual appointment. All Immigration Program appointments will be remote. When clients come in for an appointment, they will speak with one of our law student clerks before speaking with the attorney. Law clerks are trained to discuss clients' legal problems, discern important legal issues, and aid the attorneys with legal research and follow-up. Law clerks cannot give any legal advice or opinions. All conversations and case records are kept strictly confidential.

Cost

Initial attorney consultations and basic legal information and assistance are free. The client agrees to reimburse TULAP for any additional expenses he or she authorizes after meeting with the attorney (i.e., postage, copy costs, etc.). Cases involving additional work by the attorney, including court appearances, are subject to attorney's fees at a reduced rate subject to the attorney's discretion, and related expenses.
