General
The Law Library is primarily a research and reference collection of law and law-related materials to be used within the Library. Therefore, certain categories of materials do not circulate. Some examples of non-circulating items include, but are not limited to, the following:
statutes and codes
reporters
periodicals, bound and unbound
looseleaf services
reference and reserve items
digests and indices
government documents
microforms
unclassified foreign materials
all other materials labeled non-circulating
Library materials that can circulate are checked-out via an online circulation system. All Library patrons must be registered with the library prior to checking materials out from the collection. Registration forms are available at the Circulation Desk, which is located in the lobby of the library on the main level. Patrons wishing to register for services must come in during regular business hours to set up an account (Monday-Friday; 8:30 a,m. - 5:00 p.m.), or make prior arrangements with a librarian or the Access Services Coordinator. When checking out material, Tulane students should bring their student IDs to the Circulation Desk ; all other library users with borrowing privileges should provide another form of picture identification. An appropriate form of identification is required otherwise services may be denied.
Renewal Policy
The library communicates with all patrons through email. Patrons are responsible for knowing when their check-out materials are due and for regularly checking their email accounts. Unless a hold has been placed on an item, renewals may be requested either in person at the Circulation Desk or by telephone.
Recall Policy
A recall notice informs you that the loan period for an item has been shortened and that the material must be returned by a certain date. Renewals are not permitted on recalled items. Failure to return a recalled item by the recall due date will result in a loss of library privileges.
Online Catalog
A link to the library's online catalog can be found on the sidebar (to the far right of your screen). This catalog can be used to search the collection, locate an item, determine the status of an item, or to check your patron record. When checking your patron record, please be sure to use the barcode beginning with the number "2" that is found on the back of your ID. This barcode is necessary to check your record electronically. If you did not receive a barcode and would like to obtain one, please inquire at the Circulation Desk. When trying to locate an item in the library that is not on the shelf, please inquire at the Reference Desk or Circulation Desk for further assistance. Such items may be out on loan, at the bindery, or recorded as missing in our system. If an item does not fit into any of those categories, library users may request a Missing Book Form and will be contacted once a thorough search of the library stacks has been completed in an effort to locate said item. These forms are available at the Circulation Desk upon request.
Loan Periods
| Law Faculty or Law Staff |
One Year
Faculty and Staff members may check material out for one year. This is done with the understanding that they will make the material temporarily available to any law student needing the item. Fines for Overdue Books / Fees for Lost Books
Fines for regularly circulating items are not automatically assessed; however, students are expected to renew materials by the date due. Overdue notices are sent as reminders to renew or return materials. Patrons will be billed for materials which are long overdue -- the cost of the item (a minimum of $75.00) plus processing and billing fees. The library charges fines for overdue reserve or reference material and overdue interlibrary loans.
Reference/Reserve Fines:
$6 for the first hour the item is overdue, plus $3.00 for each subsequent hour (fines accrue only during the hours the library is open).
Interlibrary Loan Fines:
$3.00 per day. Fines are not charged when renewal has been requested in a timely fashion, Once renewal is denied by the lending institution, the patron has 3 days to return the item before fine accrual begins. There is no limit to the amount which can be fined for delinquent ILLs. Should a patron lose an item borrowed from another institution, he or she will be required to pay the replacement cost as determined by the lending library and all fines/processing fees..
Media Fines:
$50.00 per day.
