Biography:
Mr. Butterworth practices in the areas of admiralty and tort litigation, which includes collision, cargo, pollution and longshoreman personal injury litigation at the trial and appellate levels. In addition to litigation, he teaches in the maritime law program at Tulane University Law School, where he received his JD in 1989.
Mr. Butterworth has been awarded the “AV” rating by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, which is the highest possible rating for legal ability and ethical standards. He is also among a select group of lawyers listed in a nationwide client survey published in The Best Lawyers in America.
Prior to joining Phelps Dunbar, Mr. Butterworth was with the Terriberry, Carroll, & Yancey, LLP law firm, which merged with Phelps Dunbar LLP in 2006. Before law school, he worked for Sea-Land, Crowley Maritime, Dutra Construction, and various other maritime companies as a vessel officer and captain, both blue water and brown water.
