First Session: July 1 - July 14 / Second Session: July 19 – July 31
“GOOD AMERICANS, WHEN THEY DIE, GO TO PARIS.” - Oscar Wilde
Assuming Oscar Wilde is right, why postpone the inevitable journey? Come join the prestigious Tulane summer program, the oldest, continuously running program in France. Cultivated people the world over have long regarded Paris as not only the world’s most beautiful city, but the cultural and intellectual heart of Europe. Paris is also the spiritual home of the civil law.
Tulane University School of Law, with its roots deep in the Napoleonic law, is particularly at home in the capital of France. In the United States, Tulane has been precursor and pioneer in the field of comparative law: it teaches a complete civil law curriculum, conducts regular faculty exchange with great law faculties of Europe, and brings European students each year to its graduate program in New Orleans. Our program in Paris not only follows that tradition, but has created a new one: to train American students and lawyers to understand the new European Union. Our Paris Institute’s courses in International and Comparative Law are designed to ready students for transnational practice in the United States, Europe or other parts of the world. The Institute is conducted in conjunction with Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris (C.I.U.P). In addition to the large contingent of American law students from around the United States, each year a number of students from other European universities are admitted. Our program takes advantage of the educational and cultural riches of Paris by including visits to courts and museums. For American students who can speak French fluently, we offer a limited number of internships at French law firms in Paris.
PARIS INTERNSHIPS (MUST BE ENROLLED IN BOTH PARIS SESSIONS IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR AN INTERNSHIP)
For the student serious about a career in international practice, Tulane offers an excellent opportunity. Through an internship in a French firm in Paris, you can make your own job contacts in Europe, gain an important credential and learn how law is actually practiced in France. During the program, a reception is held honoring the interns and their host law firms. These unpaid, but prestigious internships are limited in number and are strictly reserved for students registered in the Tulane Paris program. Students participating in the internship program must be able to speak fluent French. The period of the internship (usually 2 to 6 weeks) is negotiable with the firm. It is best to start the internship in June prior to the start of classes and continue concurrently with classes through July. Students interested in internships should indicate their desire to participate on their applications. Because space is limited, internships are awarded on a competitive basis. The deadline for submission of the applicants’ CV and evidence of speaking ability (transcripts, diplomas etc.) is March 15, 2010. For more information see the internships section of the website.
