Center for Transatlantic Legal Studies
Session: July 19 – July 31, 2010
NOTE: The Program formally starts with a reception at a pub near Lincoln's Inn Fields on Sunday night, July 18, 2010.
Why focus on legal issues of transatlantic relevance? The answer is simple. The United States is the single most important trading partner of the European Union (and vice versa) – despite the growing importance of expanding economies such as India, China, the ASEAN, or Brazil. The sheer volume of transatlantic trade and the battle for worldwide market shares inevitably create a need for lawyers with specialized and comparative legal expertise in a number of areas including taxation, conflict resolution, transatlantic litigation, substantive commercial and business law, company law, data protection, tort law, intellectual property rights, or competition law. The relationship between the U.S. and the EU as members of the World Trade Organization and parties to a number of international agreements is equally relevant. Knowledge about both legal systems is a prerequisite for young lawyers who wish to work in the field.
Why come to London? Prepare yourself for transatlantic legal practice in one of the world’s most important and vibrant business and financial centers. The Transatlantic Legal Studies Summer Program is a partnership of Tulane Law School and the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary’s School of Law. QM is home to one of the most outstanding law schools in the United Kingdom and is regularly ranked among the country’s top legal research institutions. Classes are held at the Centre for Commercial Law located adjacent to the Lincoln’s Inn Fields, the ‘legal heart’ London. [See map.] Student housing is available at a subsidized rate within walking distance from the Centre. Students from law schools throughout the U.S. have attended the Program during its six-year history. In 2010, courses are offered in four crucial areas – comparative products liability, transatlantic litigation, the regulation of intellectual property, and US-EU business law. Special attention is devoted to a general introduction to the British and European legal systems. Optional tours of the UK Houses of Parliament and the law courts, and additional lectures and talks on transatlantic legal practice by both European and American lawyers will provide students with a range of insights to a completely different and intriguing legal world. What about practical working experience? The Center for Transatlantic Legal Studies will assist students seeking internship opportunities in London, Brussels and other European locations. Please contact the Program Director for details.
Is it all about work? No! Take the opportunity to enjoy the unsurpassed diversity of London’s cultural life. Great museums, Shakespearean theater, modern musicals, clubs, and an unparalleled offer of international cuisine take your mind off law whenever a break is needed. The West End, London’s theater district, is just a couple of subway stops away, as is the Royal Albert Hall, a leading venue for classical music performances.
