The Tulane Center for International Human Rights and International Criminal Law
Session: JULY 11 – AUGUST 4, 2012
NOTE: The introductory class begins on Wednesday, July 11, 2012. See course information below.
NOW IN ITS TWENTIETH YEAR, Tulane's summer program in Amsterdam has been described by the American Bar Association as “almost a prototype of what other foreign summer programs should aspire to become.” In the ABA's words: “Overall, the program represents a wonderful opportunity for those interested in international criminal law to learn a great deal about a considerable number of sub-specialties in that field in a relatively short period of time.” It has been described by students as a program with “Experienced Faculty, courses tailored to interests, experience with tribunals at the Hague, thorough materials, and proximity to other int'l law students…”.
This summer's month-long program will again be the premier venue for the study of international criminal and human rights law, one that offers both an excellent education and the amazing city of Amsterdam. A total of nine one-credit courses will be offered, consisting of one required introductory course, which takes place on Thursday and Friday of the first week, followed by two elective courses in each of the two-week terms that follow, for a maximum of five credits. The introductory course will be a survey of the basic principles and institutions of international criminal law and human rights, and the elective courses will be devoted to specific topics in these fields, as described on the courses page of this website.
The courses will be taught by faculty drawn from universities and private practice in both the United States and Europe, all of whom are recognized as leading experts in their respective fields. Amsterdam, with a history of studies in international criminal law dating back to the 16th Century, is an ideal location for the study of these two important international law subjects. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), The International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the newly created International Criminal Court (ICC) are just a short distance away, at The Hague. Arrangements have been made for a visit to these courts, and to have representatives from the tribunals visit to lecture on their work.
In addition to being the perfect academic setting for the program, Amsterdam is one of the most important cultural centers in Europe, offering an extraordinary range of museums, galleries, classical and avant-garde varieties of music, theatre, dance, and the most lively and interesting street life to be found anywhere in Europe. The program itself, and the student housing, are located in the beautiful canal area in the heart of Amsterdam, next door to these attractions, and in the midst of an endless array of clubs, cafes, restaurants and entertainment of every conceivable type. Moreover, Amsterdam’s location makes weekend visits to England, Belgium, Denmark or France little more than a short train ride away.
