Session: JULY 2 - JULY 31, 2010
NOTE: The introductory class begins on Monday, July 5, 2010. See course information below.
NOW IN ITS EIGHTEENTH YEAR, Tulane's summer program in Amsterdam has been described by the American Bar Association as “a model for other foreign summer programs . . . [with a] curriculum [that is] excellent in concept and excellent in execution.”
This summer's month-long program will again be the premier venue for the study of international criminal and human rights law. A total of nine one-credit courses will be offered, consisting of one required introductory course, which takes place on Monday and Tuesday of the first week, followed by four elective courses in each of the two-week sessions that follow. The introductory course will be a survey of the basic principles and institutions of international criminal law and human rights, and the elective courses will be devoted to specific topics in these fields, as described below.
The courses will be taught by faculty drawn from universities and private practice in both the United States and Europe, all of whom are recognized as leading experts in their respective fields. Amsterdam, with a history of studies in international criminal law dating back to the 16th Century, is an ideal location for the study of these two important international law subjects. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), The International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the newly created International Criminal Court (ICC) are just a short distance away, at The Hague. Arrangements have been made for a visit to these courts, and to have representatives from the tribunals visit to lecture on their work.
In additional to being the perfect academic setting for the program, Amsterdam offers an extraordinary range of cultural and recreational opportunities, including one of Europe’s richest architectural traditions, world-famous museums and galleries, classical and avant-garde varieties of music, theatre and dance, and the most lively and interesting street life to be found anywhere in Europe. The program itself, and the student housing, are located in the beautiful canal area in the heart of Amsterdam, next door to these cultural opportunities, and in the midst of an endless array of clubs, cafes, restaurants and entertainment of every conceivable type. Moreover, Amsterdam’s location makes weekend visits to England, Belgium, or France little more than a short train ride away.
Calendar:
Students should arrive in Amsterdam either July 2nd or 3rd. The mandatory introductory course will begin on Monday, July 5, 2010 and continue Tuesday, July 6, 2010. Exams will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2010 (for the first session) and Saturday, July 31, 2010 (for the second session). Please note that exams will occupy virtually the entire Saturday. Accordingly, students should not plan to depart before the evening of that day, as examinations may not be rescheduled.
