Tulane Moot Court is one of the largest student-run organizations on campus. Each year we provide students of all experience levels with the opportunity to work collaboratively and sharpen their oral and written advocacy skills; skills that they will be called on to use throughout their careers, and which can only be developed through practice.
The Moot Court program was founded in 1929 by a small group of Tulane Law students, including the legendary U.S. Fifth Circuit Judge, John Minor Wisdom. In fact, Tulane Moot Court is among the oldest and most visible programs of its kind in the nation; alumni include state and federal judges, members of Congress, U.S. Ambassadors, and state governors.
Each year 2L and 3L students earn academic credit by competing in a number of national and international moot court competitions. We send our Interschool teams to Appellate, Alternative Dispute Resolution (Negotiation & Mediation), and Trial competitions across the country, as well as to the Vis Arbitration Competition in Vienna, Austria. Our teams have been very successful in the past few years. For example, our trial teams advanced in every competition this year. The Tulane ABA Criminal Law team (2008) advanced to the semi-final round, as did the Tulane Texas Young Lawyers' Association National Trial Competition team (2008) and the Tulane Lone Star Trial Competition Team (2007). The Tulane AAJ Trial Advocacy Team were regional semi-finalists. As 2Ls (2007), this same team won the Regional Competition and placed third in the country, losing to the eventual National Champions by only one point in the semi-final round. Our appellate teams also have been very successful, with the Tulane ABA National Appellate Advocacy team (2008) and the Tulane Pace Environmental Law Appellate team (2008) advancing to the quarter-finals. The Tulane John R. Brown Admiralty Appellate team members were 2008 finalists and received an award for best brief. Further, the Tulane Alternative Dispute Resolution team won the regional competition and advanced to nationals in 2007 and 2006. We look for talented individuals to carry-on this impressive record!
The Tulane Intraschool Competition offers an additional way for student to sharpen their oral and written advocacy skills. All first-year students participate in the 1L Appellate Open, which is run in conjunction with the Legal Research and Writing Program. 1Ls may also choose to participate in the 1L Trial Open. 2L and 3L students compete in the Junior (2L) or Senior (3L) Appellate, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Trial competitions. Junior Finalists are invited to join the Moot Court Board during their 3L year, while the names of the top two Senior Finalists in each competition are engraved in the marbles in Room 110.
