The Cowen Institute recently completed its selection of Jones Scholars for the fall 2008 semester. The Jones Scholars Review and Selection Committee selected Ian Furman, joint J.D. and M.B.A. candidate, for participation in the fall 2008 cohort.
In the summer of 2005, Furman completed his training with Teach for America and had been assigned to teach at Sarah Reed High School in New Orleans East before the city called for a mandatory evacuation on account of Hurricane Katrina. But a storm wouldn't didn't stop him from pursuing his objective. In his letter of interest to the institute, Furman indicated the internship program would be “a way to meaningfully contribute to the education of the children of New Orleans when circumstances previously prevented me from doing so.”
The only applicant from the law school for this application cycle, Furman will be working with the Children’s Bureau of New Orleans in an evaluation of its Grief & Trauma Group Intervention project.
