Plastic headlines Tulane Environmental Law Journal

May 12, 2014

Tulane Environmental Law Journal

In “The Graduate,” Benjamin Braddock got the advice “one word … plastics” upon his college graduation.

As Tulane Law School’s May 17 graduation approaches, the new edition of the Tulane Environmental Law Journal focuses on plastic — with articles addressing legal issues surrounding plastic pollution.

Authors include Marcus Eriksen, science director of the 5 Gyres Institute, a nonprofit that works to eliminate plastic waste in the world’s oceans and watersheds. Eriksen was a keynote speaker at Tulane’s 19th Annual Summit on Environmental Law & Policy. The Tulane Environmental Law Journal collaborated with 5 Gyres to solicit articles for the issue. Topics include the impact of single-use plastic packaging on the marine environment; laws to reduce the use of plastic bags; and proposed legislation to ban plastic microbeads from personal care products.

An introduction to the journal, evoking that classic scene from The Graduate, was written by environmental law attorney Lisa Kaas Boyle (L ’90), who co-founded the Plastic Pollution Coalition and was a founding board member of the 5 Gyres Institute.

Journal issues can be ordered here or by emailing lawjournals@tulane.edu.
