Graduates honored at annual law school awards ceremony

Tulane Law School hosted its annual awards ceremony Friday (May 18) at Weinmann Hall, where 35 students received awards for academic excellence, community service, and leadership. The following 2012 graduates were recognized:

Cassie Ray DuBay The Student Bar Association President Award This award goes to the individual who has served as the president of
the Student Bar Association.

Order of the Barristers This national honor society is dedicated to the encouragement of oral advocacy and brief-writing skills through law school appellate moot court programs. Students who have demonstrated excellence in Tulane’s Moot Court program are selected for membership.
Arly Sue Rose Smith-Pearson Moot Court Chief Justice An honorary gavel is presented to the graduate who served a Chief Justice of Tulane’s Moot Court.
Ashley Louise Banks The Louisiana State Bar Association Law Student Pro Bono Award This award is presented to a law student who has demonstrated a dedication to providing legal services to the poor.
Jodie Michelle Sullivan The Association for Women Attorneys Award The New Orleans Association for Women Attorneys funds a yearly award for the outstanding student in the Domestic Violence Clinic. The Association is a non-profit corporation whose membership includes both women and men and represents every sector of the legal community.

The James A. Wysocki Trial Advocacy Awards This award was endowed by Mrs. Cristina Wysocki to honor the life of her husband, a noted trial attorney and graduate of Notre Dame, who respected and admired Tulane trial lawyers. The fund provides cash prizes to the students who have outstanding achievement in Trial Advocacy.
Ryan Powers Boyle The Brian McSherry Community Service Award This fund was endowed in memory of Brian McSherry, a 1981 graduate of Tulane Law School. An award is given annually to the graduating student who has demonstrated the greatest dedication to the Law School’s community service program.
Madison Ann Hardee The General Maurice Hirsch Award Endowed by Mrs. Elise Newman Solomon to honor the life and achievement of General Hirsch, this award is presented each year to the graduating student who, in the judgment of the faculty, has contributed most distinctively and constructively to university or community needs.

The H. Martin Hunley Jr. Award in Health Care Law The New Orleans law firm of Lemle & Kelleher has established an award in honor of H. Martin Hunley Jr.’s 50 years of service in the area of medical malpractice, health and hospitals, and insurance-related trial law. Mr. Hunley is a 1947 graduate of Tulane Law School. The award is presented to the outstanding graduate in health care law.
Alexander Darrow Forger II Federal Bar Association Award Recognition is given by the New Orleans Chapter of the Federal Bar Association to the graduate who has achieved the greatest distinction in the study of federal law.
Brendan William Conroy The Louisiana State Bar Association Corporate and Business Law Section Award An award is given to the graduating student with outstanding achievement in the study of corporate law.

The Haber Joseph McCarthy Environmental Law Award This award was created in memory of Haber McCarthy, a 1985 graduate of Tulane Law School. The award goes to the graduating student who has outstanding achievement in the study of environmental law.
Christian Troy Johnson The Edward A. Dodd, Jr. Award in Admiralty In memory of Edward A. Dodd, Jr., who received the LLM in Admiralty at Tulane in 1984, an award is offered each year by the Maritime Law Center at Tulane Law School in recognition of outstanding achievement in the graduate study of Admiralty Law.
Clara Volwahsen Academic Excellence Award Recognition is given by the dean to LLM students who received all grades of 'Excellent'.

The Charles Kohlmeyer Jr. Award in Maritime Law The Lemle and Kelleher award is made in honor of and in memory of Charles Kohlmeyer, Jr., who was a partner of the firm. It is presented to the outstanding JD graduate in Maritime Law.
Alexander Ryan Plaum The Tulane Tax Institute Award in Taxation The graduating student who has achieved the greatest distinction in the study of taxation receives an award funded by the Tulane Tax Institute, which produces a continuing education program in the field of taxation.
Samuel Thomas Brandao The John Minor Wisdom Award This award was endowed in 1987 by the former law clerks of the Honorable John Minor Wisdom. The recipient must be an outstanding JD candidate who has demonstrated excellence in academic work and in writing ability, has contributed selflessly to the law school community, and who has accepted a federal or state judicial clerkship after graduation.
Alexander Nicholas Hess The George Dewey Nelson Memorial Award The student in the graduating class who attains the greatest distinction in common law subjects throughout the three years of law study is awarded a certificate in recognition. George Dewey Nelson, Jr., a Tulane law alumnus, created this award in honor of his father.
Laura Nicole Buck The Civil Law Studies Award Established in 1983 by the Louisiana State Bar Association, this award is presented to the graduating student who has the highest grade point average in civil law courses.

The Dean's Medal This award is given by the Dean of the school to the graduating student who attains the highest grade point average during the third year. 
Cynthia Olivia Smuzynska The Faculty Medal This award is presented by the Tulane Law School faculty to the graduating student who attains the highest grade point average in the entire course of three years in the school. 

In addition to those graduates listed above, Tulane Law Professor Keith Werhan, Ashton Phelps Chair of Constitutional Law, received The Felix Frankfurter Distinguished Teaching Award, and adjunct faculty member Michael R. Fontham received The Monty Lemann Award. Both professors were recognized by Dean David Meyer during the Tulane Law School Diploma Ceremony held Saturday, May 19, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. inside Fogelman Arena.
