The student chapters of Alianza del Derecho at Tulane University Law School and Loyola University New Orleans College of Law will be hosting the Fifteenth Annual National Latina/o Law Student Association Conference Thursday, September 29, through Saturday, October 1, 2011.
The 2011 conference theme, ‘Crossroads: Changing Faces in New Beginnings,’ recognizes “the moment where a new culture, full of color and life, enters a community in the time of growth and recovery,” expounds conference co-chairs Daniel Perez of Loyola Law School and Ana Maria Rivera of Tulane law. The duo says Crossroads is a way to highlight “the many contributions being made by Latinas/os in the rebuilding efforts taking place in New Orleans, which is itself a reflection of an increasingly diverse nation undergoing its own transformations.”
In addition to a community service event and moot court competition, national political figures and federal judges from around the country will serve as panelists, leading discussions and sharing their thoughts on Hispanic issues with national and local relevance. The topics presented at the conference will focus primarily on immigration and education reforms, workers’ rights, and Latinas/os in the judiciary, among others.
According to Rivera, “[Tulane’s] student chapter of Alianza is proud to be selected from the top law schools in the country to host 300 Hispanic law students from around the country.” The event strives to unite various sectors of the legal profession, she says, and it encourages attendees to understand and tackle the urgent issues faced today.
