Captain (Ret.) Gordan Van Hook will deliver the William Tetley Maritime Law Lecture on February 24, 2010, at 6:00 p.m. in Room 100 of Weinmann Hall. Captain Van Hook is Senior Director of Innovation and Concept Development at Maersk Line Ltd. He was the principal Maersk spokeman during the 2009 capture by pirates of the U.S.-flagged container ship Maersk Alabama. His lecture is entitled "21st Century Piracy and the Taking of the Maersk Alabama."
Before joining Maersk, Captain Van Hook had a broad and varied career in the U.S. Navy. Among other things, he acted as operations officer for the Fifth Fleet to launch Operation Enduring Freedom, he commanded Destroyer Squadron 23, and he served as Sea Combat Commander for the Nimitz Strike Group.
