Given Tulane Law School's strong tradition of commitment to international and comparative study, it is not surprising to find an abundance of opportunities to study international and comparative law in the classroom. The richness of our curriculum enables us to offer Certificate Programs in such areas as International & Comparative Law, European Legal Studies, and Civil Law.
In 2007, the Payson Center for International Development became a formal division of Tulane Law School, further enriching our students' opportunities for study and international work.
In addition to the courses and faculty at Tulane, our students may also choose to spend periods ranging from weeks to months studying law in other parts of the world, through our Summer Study Abroad programs and our International Exchange Programs, both described below.
Summer Study Abroad
Tulane Law School's summer abroad programs include sessions ranging from one week to one month in length and in 2009 will be taught in:
- London and Cambridge, England
- Paris, France
- Berlin, Germany
- Rhodos and Spetses, Greece
- Siena, Italy
- Amsterdam, The Netherlands
These programs together offer over 60 courses and underscore Tulane's commitment to international and comparative law. Over the past 20 years, Tulane's international summer programs have brought Tulane students and those from over 150 other law schools together with professors from Tulane and dozens of other law schools from the US and abroad. Faculty in our summer programs also include prominent state and federal court judges including, in recent years, US Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Associate Justices Harry Blackmun, Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Antonin Scalia.

In most cases, Tulane students spend one semester at the international- exchange partner university, receiving 14 credits toward the Tulane JD for successful completion of the semester's work. Appropriate language fluency is required for the exchange programs in Argentina, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The exchange arrangements in place permit one or two Tulane law students to attend each of the exchange-partner universities each year. Tulane students pay tuition to Tulane for the semester spent at the partner university. For more detailed information on going abroad for a semester, please see our 2010 Exchange Programs Information Packet. You can also visit Professor Herbert Larson or Chana Lewis in Suite 259 for more information.
For students that are interested in going abroad, an information session is held each semester. Please be on the lookout for our upcoming session!
Each year, law students from the exchange-partner universities spend one or two semesters at Tulane Law School. For more information and application details, visit the International Exchange Program website .
The international student-exchange programs are supervised by Herbert Larson, Executive Director of International Studies.
