IN 2008, U.S. LAW SCHOOLS will offer over 234 ABA-approved summer programs abroad, more than double the number offered 10 years ago. Tulane Law School began sponsoring summer study in law in Grenoble, France in 1973. Tulane has over a quarter-century’s worth of experience running summer law programs abroad which is reflected in its 2008 programs. Our experience in designing and executing these programs abroad means that we have long-established associations with and ties to the locations and universities with which we work. In addition to interesting and well-taught courses, students can be confident that they will find well organized and professionally run programs that offer living accommodations, extra-curricular activities, internships, and faculty who will explore the surrounding culture along with their students.
Tulane’s historical commitment to the areas of international and comparative law, its relationships with foreign scholars, and its connections to our summer program locations have led to a particularly well-established group of programs. Over 4,000 law students from approximately 140 U.S. law schools have attended our programs, taught by faculty from Tulane, other U.S. law schools, and universities abroad. Through the years, prominent scholars and prestigious federal judges have highlighted our faculty. From the U.S. Supreme Court alone, these have included Justices Harry Blackmun, Stephen Breyer, Ruth Ginsburg, Antonin Scalia, and Chief Justice William Rehnquist. We are fortunate, too, that students from our host institutions abroad also participate in many of the programs, adding a valuable dimension to classroom discussions, as well as first-hand knowledge of local and regional attractions.
Tulane’s summer programs, all of which are approved by the American Bar Association, maximize in-class participation and out-of-class interaction among students and faculty. Although each program has its own personality, all foster a deeper learning experience by immersing students not only in the substance of their coursework, but also in the cultures in which they are living.
As you read the descriptions that follow, you should gain some sense of the strengths of the various programs. However, participants in all of the Tulane programs benefit from Tulane’s long experience and strong commitment to summer study abroad.
